The District Hospital Vijayapura was started in 1886 near shivaji chouk , It came up with a new building of 250 bedded hospital in 1976 at Athani road next to sainik school second gate, Training centre for trained birth assistants/daayi was started in 1983. The hospital developed MOU with Al-Ameen Medical College for deputing of its Doctors & Medical students for practicing/internship in its OPD facility respectively in 1984. The hospital set uped its Blood Bank in 1995. Renovation of the building along with construction of one more new ward under KHSDP was completed in 1999. In-house pharmacy for the hospital was setup in 2004. Yoga, Naturopathy, telemedicine services for the hospital was started in 2008. Dialysis facility for the hospital was started in 2009. New 100 Beded MCH Hospital functioning Started in its own building on 02/10/2018 Along with MRI and CT Scan center under PPP mode at the premises.

100 beded TB and CD Hospital merged to main hospital on 12/02/2019 and Presently it has a bed strength of 626 beds.The hospital caters to the healthcare requirements of more than 25 lakh people in the city vijayapura inclusive of five Taluks Vijayapura District Basava Bagawadi, Indi, Mudalhabil, Sindagi and other talukas of Belgavi, Sangli, Gulburga, Bagalkote, Raichur etc.
The main objective of the hospital is to provide holistic healthcare services- preventive, promotive, curative and rehabilitative-under the allopathic system and curative services under AYUSH.
Seven new Modular Operation theaters have been renovated with high advanced equipments. Emergency ward beds are doubled, early it was 10 bedded.
New ICU has been set up with capacity of 10 beds , NICU/SNCU bed capacity increased to 20 bedded and other major departments are under renovation.
At present hospital covers 1500- 2000 Out patients per day, 60-70 admission, 40-50 deliveries in that 10-15 are LSCS and 40-50 dialysis cycles per day (Under PPP Model) and about 30-40 emergency cases were managed at Causality every day.
District Hospital Vijayapura got award for best health care facility grade 1 by ICICI Lombardo and CNBC TV 18 awards in year 2013 and also got 1st prize in Kayakalpa Award under Swach Bharath Abhiyan for the year 2015-16 and 2016-17 consecutively for two year.

NABH (National Accreditation board of Hospital and Health care organization ) activities started in the month of Dec 2014. And its Policy implementation stated and District Hospital Pre- Assessments completed month of march 2016 and got around 32 NC . This program aims towards providing quality health care services to patients at free or affordable cost. Along with this program
National quality assurance System (NQAS) certificated for all 7 departments mainly OT,SNCU .Labor Room, Blood Bank , ICU and maternity ward is certified in the month of April 2018 and renewed for 2019.
